Multiple-Choice Melodrama

Version 1

One day Jesus was walking along a road, just whistling a happy tune, when he realized he was thirsty.

"Hey…," he said (pause), "I’m thirsty!" (pause)

There was a lady over on the other side of the road selling water. She kept yelling, "Water! Get yer ice-cold water here!" (pause)

Jesus walked over to the lady and asked, "Can I have some water?" (pause)

She handed him a cup, and he drank and sighed a big ol’ sigh of relief. Then he said, "Thanks!" (pause), and left. The lady went on yelling about her water. (pause)

Version 2

One day Jesus was riding down a road on a horse. The horse was a little uncontrollable and kept veering off the road into the kids sitting in chairs nearby.

Jesus said, "Whoa, horsy!" (pause) and the horse moved back onto the road.

Alongside the road there was a well. A woman was standing by it and pulling up a bucket of water. She was singing a song about water that sounded like she was just making it up. (pause) In fact, she sang it even louder. (pause) Then she started doing a little dance to the tune of the song. (pause)

Jesus watched all this, rubbed his chin, and said, "Hmm." (pause) He hopped down off his horse, walked over to the lady, and said, "Excuse me." (pause)

Startled, she whirled around and shrieked.

Jesus said, "Sorry," (pause) "I didn’t mean to startle you." (pause) "But I was wondering" (pause) "if you could refresh me with some of your water." (pause)

The lady didn’t understand that he was thirsty, so she said, "Sure," (pause) and tossed a cup of water in his face.

Version 3

Jesus was sitting by a well. He was tired from a long walk and was starting to fall asleep. Then this woman showed up and started pulling water out of the well with a bucket.

Jesus asked her, "Can I have some of your water?" (pause)

She said, "Why me?" (pause)

Jesus answered, "If you knew who I was, you’d ask me for living water." (pause)

She said, "I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about." (pause)

Jesus explained, "I can quench the thirst in your soul." (pause)

And everyone in the room said, "Oh, I get it." (pause—make sure all the kids in the room say this line together.)
